With new brand ethos and wardrobe style that would support the same, Zozibini Tunzi from South Africa, became the longest reigning Miss Universe and her 365+ days long runway of unforgettable looks!
A year back, a short haired South African woman named Zozibini Tunzi was crowned as Miss Universe 2019. She echoed the whole stage with her final word speaking about inclusivity in the beauty world. Ringing in the right time when inclusivity isn’t just a term but a necessity, the Miss Universe Organization did wonderful in electing her as the face of their brand.
"I think the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It's something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time. Not because we don't want to but because of what society has labelled women to be. I think we are the most powerful beings in the world and that we should be given every opportunity. And that is what we should be teaching these young girls to take up space. Nothing is as important as taking up space in society and cementing yourself, thank you,"
‘Nothing is as important as taking up space in society and cementing yourself, thank you.’ Zozi said and that was it, the crown was hers to win. She was joined with undeniably powerful counterparts- Miss Puerto Rico- a strong personality and Miss Mexico, a TEDx speaker and an author of a self help book. These top prepositions made the world aware of what the platform was asking for their delegates to be- informed, impactful and full of personality.
The debate whether pageantry has changed for good is still a hot one. But Zozibini’s win definitely signifies a change. Celebrating diversity, inclusivity and spokeswoman ship, we are looking at a modern development in pageantry.
With winning this platform, we can expect the fantastic image building done by the organization that would style the new face of the brand in styles that have a very young approach; very well appreciated by the new generation of viewers- the generation Z. It is as loud and as impactful and representative. While making a statement, elevated power dressing has been the gist of her whole wardrobe.
THE MEDIA AND PRESS WEEK
Her media and press week had her wearing the hugest of coats and fits that would nothing but cement my love for the same more prominently. A huge coat with a sleek fit underneath is always a successful choice. As she spoke about winning with the outstanding statements she made at the stage, my mind was quick to see her style and analyse how flawlessly she was sporting them. Speaking to Trevor Noah, she wore a flare sleeved mini dress, a ‘70s tribute. Her stylist Emma Pritchard, whom I admire for having such a great sense of putting edge to her power-dressing, added a lot of emphasis on bringing out Zozi’s fun personality and new brand identity that was going to follow soon in for the Miss Universe Organization.
The golden three piece suit was making her glisten in the surreal dream that is to be a Miss Universe. It was such a powerful move.
THE HOMECOMING
Her trip back to South Africa as the new Miss Universe 2019, was not short than a parade to celebrate 3 victories in past 5 years (change of ownership lead South Africa win in 2017 and hold a First runner up position in 2018 with Demi-Leigh Peters and Tamaryn Green respectively) She was dressed in bold prints signifying the South African culture. The prints in bodycon, flared pants and extremely flowy maxi dresses showcased the true essence of local designers and craftsmanship.
APPEARANCES AT PAGEANTS
Zozi had the opportunity to judge the up and coming Miss South Africa 2020, Miss USA and Miss Indonesia. Though the latter was held before the travel restrictions, we saw Zozi embracing the traditional Kebaya. She continued the tradition of Miss Universes’ presence at the national pageant.
For Miss South Africa amidst the pandemic, she was the judge and wore a nude embellished gown by South African designer Warrick Gautier.
The Quarantine Fashion Show
Following a few weeks into her routine, the pandemic restrictions made the world stop. This made the organization to let Zozibini take control over the social media and have exciting conversations with contestants, activists and former titleholders about the changing world. The style adapted to loungewear in joggers and sweatshirts with head scarves and gave us a peek into Zozi’s style at the New York apartment.
One thing to note here, being a solid spokesperson became a requirement to be in the pageant in times like these. Virtual engagement becomes a dormant parameter more important than anything.
Back to New York Apartment and the journey to crown her successor
Zozibini’s street style has been an amalgamation of a colorful palette keeping her clothes full of energy. She breathes life into the clothes she wears. Playful, high energy and classy at the same time! 2020 has been a year that needs to find refuge in colors and Zozi’s wardrobe reflects just that. The New York style in the form of mini dresses, skirts, cropped jackets and thigh high boots made it classic and very in.

Right now as I type this out, Zozi is few days away from crowning her successor. She calmly watches as she prepares to handover the crown and sash her new sister.
There is an undying impact that Zozi is leaving behind. A legacy that holds so much importance and the style that aided her become one of the most stylish Miss Universes’ ever. She puts sophistication in her youthful personality. Letting us understand and relate to her on ground level. The organization promotes brand values that would embrace femininity, power and personality which would from now on be refllected in the styles of future Miss Universes
What do you think of the reigning Miss Universe? And does this lookbook inspire you to embrace a new you and the many styles that you should embrace fearlessly!
