#inkingcharacters

I followed a unique line-up for the #inktober during October and here are the details about it!

We all have heard of Inktober. Social media, especially Instagram, would be gearing up with the best of art content to be spun for the 30 days of October. I have been seeing my followers and few of my friends doing unique prepositions for the same. Honestly it’s no less than a festival that brings us together to start interpreting these 30 days in our own way.

I got an unique proposition from one of my fellow followers asking whether I would be interested in doing a flexible yet interesting line up for this Inktober. This proposal was coming from an account which reviews and criticizes costumes from Bollywood Movies. I was already a great fan of their work and so I was glad to be a part of it.

Rather than being a daily task, they made it easier for the participants to follow the interesting line up for each week. So, 4 illustrations for each week. That seemed like an easy task sure but then the line up was about inking characters from the given bollywood movies. To my surprise I hadn’t watched three of them (Bajirao Mastani being the exception). This made me delve into these interesting movies and study the costumes. So for week one- the movie was ‘The Dirty Picture’ starring Vidya Balan as the infamous south actor Silk Smitha. Till now, I had only heard about this movie being so good and Vidya Balan is brilliant in it. But to experience that movie, I was rather not impressed. The story felt a bit awkward though Vidya Balan is amazing and portrays the role with much determination. So, here is my version of the scene where the conservative women march against her and she just kisses the whole protest. So savage!

For week 2- the attempt took me to the deeps of Mumbai, then Bombay, with Bombay Velvet. My, my, my I was blown away with all the secrets and games that Mumbai held in its heart since it’s formation. The movie hooked me to it quite gracefully. Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor steal the show and I couldn’t resist but adore Ranbir in this one. The costumes are as flashy as the darkness of the movie and they seam well with the set up. The waistcoats on Johnny fit so well and with this, I hope waistcoats make a comeback again.

Then came along, for week 3- Bajirao Mastani. Nothing can come close to the grandeur of this cinema on the big screen. The costumes, put beautifully by Anju Modi, don’t steal the show but add to the character’s arc. So, when it comes down to inking a character from the movie. I, without doubt, chose Kashibai. The movie tells the story from her perspective as well and I am glad, out of many iterations of Kashibai, this version was played by Priyanka Chopra. Priyanka Chopra gave a face to this character which is tough to forget and not associate with. The grit, anger, hurt, happiness, innocence just flowed from the character to Chopra’s stellar performance.

Week 4 and seven murders forgiven. Okay, so towards the end of this attempt and somewhere near Halloween, things got spooky. ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’ was a perfect movie for Halloween. Again, helmed by Priyanka Chopra in the titular role and Usha Uthup as one of the supporting cast, 7 Khoon Maaf is a wild ride in the woods, mountains, cities and everywhere. Every murder starts with a marriage and well, that’s what interested me. The wedding gown seemed like a symbol rather than just a garment. It adorned hope and Sahib’s (Priyanka Chopra’s Character) belief in marriage to wrong men leading to her disappointment in not finding a suitable partner. It’s a spectacular show!

With this, I am glad I took on a different Inktober and made me see so many beautiful masterpieces that are in Bollywood (not the ones that over crowd the good ones for the sake of good box office collections). The costumes in this line up actually are put era wise, which I realised with the ‘80s influence in TDP, enigma of 18th century in Bajirao Mastani, ‘70s with Bombay Velvet and Saat Khoon Maaf spanning through decades. The journey with these characters definitely brought so much insights into the different stories that dominate the cinema world.

Till the next character, keep watching, keep reading!
